The increase in the price of cotton on the world market gives hope to farmers-Group

Mr. Sulemana Bakpa Mumuni, Supervisor of the Regional Marketing Group (RMG), cotton division for the Sissala region in the Upper West region, says the increase in the price of cotton in the world market gives a glimmer of light. hope to farmers.

He said farmers in the region were getting good results from growing cotton, following an 11.1 percent increase in the price of a kilogram of crop.

The price has been reduced from 2.25 GHC pesewas per kilogram to 2.50 GHC pesewas per kilogram for the 2021 harvest season.

Mr Mumuni told the GNA over the weekend in Tumu that the amount of cotton that is expected to be grown for the 2021 season is set at 10,000 acres, of which the Sissala region is expected to grow 3,500 acres.

Mr Mumuni said that the increase in the world market price was a blessing for cotton farmers and currently the cost per acre remained at GH ¢ 650 the same as last farming season.

Mr. Kassim Sulemana, former president of the Association of Cotton Producers of the Municipality of East Sissala, said cotton cultivation in the Sissala region was low compared to previous years.

He said that despite the government’s efforts to revive the plant, little had been seen.

He attributed the development to the unavailability of equipment for cotton picking, the lack of attention paid to the sector by the central government, and the lack of reliable and quality seeds for cotton production.

He called for more support for farmers in the region to help support the cotton industry.
