Broilers earn the most when standing up

In January 2022, meat prices in the United States increased tangibly compared to January 2021: beef prices increased by 30%, pork by 11%, turkey by 18% and chicken prices of flesh skyrocketed by 62%. Due to rising feed costs, prices are expected to accelerate, boosted by low hay supplies.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — In early 2022, U.S. meat prices continue to rise, according to a new report from market research firm IndexBox. Wholesale prices for boxed select beef cuts reached $270 per cwt, increasing 6% from December 2021 to January 2022. Over the same period, pork cuts prices increased 3% to 89 $ per hundredweight, while broiler chicken prices rose 7% to $133 per lb. In contrast, turkey prices fell 1.5% to $128 a pound.

Compared to the same period of 2021, wholesale beef prices increased by 30% in January 2022. Pork prices increased by 11% and turkey prices increased by 17%, while prices for Broilers have seen a massive jump over the past year, increasing by 62%. against January 2021.

IndexBox expects meat and poultry prices to rise moderately in the coming months due to the expected rise in feed costs. Notably, hay stocks in the United States hit a 10-year low in December 2021 as production fell sharply due to persistent drought in western parts of the United States.

U.S. Meat and Poultry Exports

U.S. meat and poultry exports totaled 7.1 million tonnes in 2020, up 7.5% from 2019 figures. In value terms, meat and poultry exports fell slightly increased to $16.4 billion.

Mexico (1.5 million tons), China (1.3 million tons) and Japan (625,000 tons) were the top destinations for US meat and poultry exports, together accounting for 49% of total exports.

In terms of value, Japan ($3.1 billion), China ($2.7 billion) and Mexico ($2.4 billion) were the largest markets for meat and poultry exported from United States in the world, with a combined share of 50% of total exports.
